In the world of Keyless entry and Access control, there are a few options for allowing users permissions. While each option helps increase your buildings security, there are benefits and drawbacks to all of them. We wanted to write a quick blog highlighting the key (pun intended) differences in some of these options within Access control today!

Card Badges

Card badges are a relatively cheap way to grant users specific permissions with the ability to upgrade and revoke permission easily. Due to their magnetic strip being associated with a user ID, an admin can easily revoke, upgrade, or remove all the permissions just by signing in to the software’s admin page. A disadvantage could be users can lose these keycards easily. Additionally, when employees and users don’t fully understand or respect security protocol, they may even share keycards to gain access to areas. While this may not be a problem initially, permissions vary from person to person, and this could result in a breach. Furthermore, if a lost card is not promptly reported and found by someone with ill intentions, this could lead to security breaches.

Key Code

A simple pin key-code is a good way of keeping those without permission out of an area. Ideally, those who are in the know regarding the combination will not write it down or share it with those who do not need these permissions. A potential drawback of the Keycode solution is that there is no way of truly knowing who entered the room and when. This is not the case with Card badge and bio-metric readers.

Bio-Metric Readers

Like something out of Mission Impossible, these systems can scan one’s fingerprint, Hand, and even Eye to allow users permission. Naturally, this option is a bit on the expensive side, but they tend to be used by industries that require this level of security.

Our Recommendation

These options have the ability to be combined for exceptional security practices! Combining your Bio-metric reader or card badge with a key code is a two-step authentication method used today by several industries.
