October was Fire Safety Month but that doesn’t mean we shouldn’t be thinking about fire safety all year long! At Secure Lock and Alarm, we love to educate and help homes and families be prepared in case of an emergency.

House fires are a common thing in the US.  It is estimated that fire departments respond to a call every 24 seconds on average. To avoid becoming a statistic, take these steps in getting your home ready for a fire.

  1. Test and upgrade alarms – This includes smoke alarms and fire alarms. It takes no more than 10 minutes to check all the smoke alarms in your home to make sure the batteries are charged. Make sure you install smoke alarms no more than 12 inches away from the ceiling.
  2. Learn how to use fire extinguishers – A lot of people have fire extinguishers in their homes but have never thought about using it. 80% of all fires can be put out with a fire extinguisher so it’s a good idea to learn how to use one! If the instructions don’t make sense, watch this video!
  3. Prepare an escape plan – You don’t want to wait until the event of a fire to figure out what to do and where everyone is. Everyone in your home should know the best escape routes and alternate escape routes if one way is blocked. Choose a spot outside, away from your home, to meet.  This way everyone will be accounted for.  It is also a good idea to have a fire drill and practice.

Secure Lock and Alarm can install smoke and fire alarms in your home. To learn more, give us a call at 978-927-6400.
